About online Virginia homeschool evaluations

A little bit about me.

Hi, there! I'm Lee Marshall. I'm a veteran and award-winning teacher, but before I ever stepped foot in the classroom I was a homeschool parent just like you.

I became a parent in 2008 and a public school teacher shortly after in 2010. It didn't take long before I knew that public school, as much I loved it as a student, was not a good fit for my neurodiverse family. As time went on and I saw how public school worked from an insider’s perspective, I realized that, in all honesty, public school wasn’t the best option for many of the students already trapped in it! As a teacher, I did my best to help those students thrive, all the while knowing that, for some of them at least, we were only making the best of a bad situation.

At home, we tested virtually every method of homeschooling we could find to figure out what would work best for our twice-exceptional son, who is both gifted and has learning disabilities; from classical to Charlotte Mason to online curriculums to unschooling. We hired tutors, took classes in person and online, and had entire seasons where my wife and I did all the teaching. We learned *a lot* about education and picked up a myriad of skills as we found our way. We also made friends and went on so many adventures - building relationships and making memories we still cherish.

Now, as my homeschool parenting journey reaches it’s end (at least until we have grandbabies!), I want to use my experience and expertise to help remove as many obstacles and barriers as I can. My mission is to help other families support their children in accessing the very best education for them.

2003-2010

University of North Texas

I studied at a local community college before transferring to the University of North Texas, where I received a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature with a minor in religious studies. I loved college and was happy to be a forever student!

2015-2020

Blue Heron Outdoor School

I studied fire-making, tracking, and bushcraft skills and completed a formal mentorship with the outdoor school until, in 2020, our family took over stewardship of the school's botanical sanctuary. We built an off-grid homestead and live there full-time now.

2010-2020

High school English teacher

From 2010 to the start of the pandemic, I worked as a English teacher in some of the toughest and most violent high schools in the nation. I won my first Teacher of the Year Award in 2013.

2015-2023

Signum University

I completed a Certificate in Tolkien Studies (and may have taken a couple of extra classes along the way...).

2020-now

Virtual teaching

In the midst of the pandemic, I took a job teaching online to help homeschool my son through his last few years of high school.

A little more about me.

  • If I could be a professional college student when I grow up, I would be! I love being a student and taking classes, and you'll often find me sneaking in a course or two into my busy schedule.

  • My current academic obsession is Tolkien. I'm a big LOTR nerd! I once went to the opening premier of the Return of the King in full cosplay.

  • I run a monthly DnD game for my son and a handful of our closest friends. The longest game I've ever run went for 3 years and took a character from 1st to 20th level.

  • I live on an off-grid botanical sanctuary in the Blue Ridge Mountains in a cabin I built by hand.

  • I've been practicing some form of martial arts since I was 5 years old. I'm currently taking tai chi classes. I love that tai chi is a martial art that tells a story.

  • I was diagnosed as an adult with ADHD and dysgraphia. It came as a bit of a surprise, because I had already been an English teacher for several years. Proof that neurodiversities and learning disabilities don't have to keep you from doing what you love!
